A leading gun lobby group has taken out full-page advertisements in some metropolitan newspapers around Australia calling for the abolition of "draconian laws".
The Sporting Shooter's Association has also established a "fighting fund" to coordinate an attack on moves to tighten gun laws.
"Why should law abiding firearm owners be held responsible for... Port Arthur..." the advertisement said.
"Draconian laws that focus only on law abiding citizens will not stop criminals or mad men."
The association timed the "urgent messages" to all gun owners to coincide with today's meeting of Police Ministers in Canberra.
It called on gun owners to lobby politicians.
